FAQ

Temporary email questions

59 answers about creating a free temporary email on @themailinator.com, using a disposable inbox, and reading the mail that arrives. The rules for what to send are on the terms and privacy pages.

Opening an inbox

Do I need an account?

No. Type a mailbox name and open it. There is no password, no profile, and no confirmation email from this site.

How do I open an inbox?

On the home page, or on the Create free email page, type a name and open the inbox. You can also go straight to /inbox/ and then the name, for example /inbox/signup.

Which domain do I use?

Use @themailinator.com. The name you choose goes in front of that domain. Addresses on any other domain are not inboxes on this site.

Can I paste a full email address?

Yes. If you paste name@themailinator.com, the site opens that inbox. A full address on a different domain is rejected.

Does capitalisation matter?

No. Signup-Test and signup-test are the same inbox. The page uses the lowercase form.

Does opening a message mark it read?

Yes, for this browser session. Unread messages stay bold until you open them here. Mark unread puts one back. Closing the browser clears that list. Another person, or another browser, keeps a separate list.

What is a valid mailbox name?

Use 1 to 64 characters. Start and end with a letter or number. Dots, underscores, plus signs, and hyphens are allowed in the middle. Two dots in a row are not allowed. Spaces and accented letters are not allowed.

Can I let the site pick a name?

Yes. Suggest a name fills the box with a random name. It does not open the inbox until you submit it, and it does not reserve that name for you.

Is an empty inbox a broken page?

No. Nothing has arrived yet. Copy the address, use it where you need an email, then press Refresh.

Privacy and safety

Who can read the messages?

Who can see a message, and how to ask for deletion, is explained on the privacy page.

Is a long random name private?

A longer name is still just a name. What that means is explained on the privacy page.

Can I send identity documents or medical information here?

Identity documents and medical information are covered in the terms and on the privacy page.

Will search engines list my inbox?

Inbox pages ask crawlers not to index them. The details are on the privacy page.

Do you sell messages or use them to train models?

No. Messages are stored so the inbox can show them. They are not sold, and they are not used to train machine-learning models.

What do you store from a message?

The recipient, the sender, the subject, a message id when one is present, the time it was stored, and the message content. When the message can be read, the plain-text and HTML parts are kept as well.

Do you set tracking cookies?

Google Analytics may set cookies so visits can be counted. The host, Cloudflare, may set a technical cookie used to filter abusive traffic. This site does not set advertising cookies.

Are contact addresses private?

Write to privacy@themailinator.com or abuse@themailinator.com. Read the privacy page before you include personal details.

What this site will not do

Can I send mail from here?

No. The site only shows mail that has already arrived. There is no reply button and no outbox.

Can I forward a message?

No. There is no forward action. You can copy the text if you need it somewhere else.

Can I download attachments?

No. The message page can list file names and types. The files themselves are not offered for download.

Will remote images in an email load?

No. The formatted view blocks pictures that would be downloaded from another server. A missing image in that view often means the block is working.

Can an email run scripts on this site?

No. The formatted view is isolated. Scripts in the message are not allowed to run in the page.

Can I protect an inbox with a password?

No. Inboxes on this site do not have a password. The terms explain what the service does and does not include.

Can I use my own domain?

No. Inboxes on this site are only addresses at @themailinator.com.

Is there a mobile app?

No. The website works in a phone browser. There is no separate app and no push notification.

Reading messages

How many messages does the page show?

The newest 40 stored messages for that address. Older rows can still exist in storage without appearing on the list.

Which message is at the top?

The newest stored message is first.

Does the page update by itself?

Yes, while the inbox tab stays open. You can also choose Refresh. If the browser tab is in the background, checking pauses until you come back.

What if a message has no subject?

The list shows (no subject). You can still open the row.

Where should I look for a verification code?

Read the plain-text part first. Open the formatted version only when you need to check layout. A code that exists only inside a remote image will not be visible here.

What timezone is the received time?

Times on the page are shown in UTC.

Why is the plain-text part empty?

The sender did not include a text part, or it could not be read. If a formatted part exists, you can open that view. Some messages only contain a file, and files are not downloaded here.

Can I search inside an inbox?

No. The page is a list, not a search box. Scroll the newest messages or open a row.

When mail does not arrive

How long do messages stay?

Until they are removed. This site does not promise a storage period or a deletion date.

Why has my message not appeared?

Check that the form used the full address at @themailinator.com, that you opened the same name, and that the sending service accepted the message. Mail can also be delayed. This site cannot show a message that never arrived.

Does a success message in my app mean the inbox has the mail?

No. A success message usually means your app handed the message to a mail service. It does not prove the message reached this site.

Can a sender block this domain?

Yes. Some mail services reject domains used for temporary inboxes. If their form will not accept the address, this site cannot override that.

Is delivery guaranteed?

No. Messages can be delayed, rejected by the sender, or removed here later.

What if the message is very large?

A very large message may fail to be stored. The inbox will not show a message that was not stored.

Do you notify me when mail arrives?

No. There is no email alert, phone alert, or webhook. Open the inbox page to look.

Names and sharing

If I come back tomorrow, is it the same inbox?

Yes. The same name opens the same stored messages, for as long as those messages are still kept.

Does a plus sign create a folder inside another inbox?

No. billing+april@themailinator.com is a different inbox from billing@themailinator.com. Each full name is exact.

Are names like admin or privacy reserved?

No. Those names work like any other name. privacy@themailinator.com and abuse@themailinator.com are the contact addresses. Read the privacy page before you send personal details.

Can a team share one address?

Yes. Share the name and everyone can open the same inbox.

Should I put a customer's name in the mailbox?

No. Leave real names, phone numbers, and account ids out of the mailbox name. The name is visible to anyone who opens the inbox.

Can two tests share one name?

They can, and their messages will mix. Use a separate name when the test changes so a code from one form is not confused with another.

Deletion and reports

Can I delete a message from the page?

No. The page has no delete button. You can ask for stored messages to be removed by writing to privacy@themailinator.com.

What should a deletion request include?

The mailbox name and, if you have it, the message id. The privacy page explains what to leave out of that email.

Will a deletion request remove every copy immediately?

We delete what we can still find in the mailbox store. A backup or a log line at the host can remain for a while. There is no promised timetable.

How do I report abuse or illegal content?

Write to abuse@themailinator.com with the mailbox name, the page URL or message id, and a short description. Do not attach the sensitive material. The terms explain how removal requests are handled.

Can I ask you to remove someone else's inbox?

You can ask. Many people can claim the same public name, so we may need enough detail to understand the request. We may refuse a request we cannot verify.

About the site

Does the site cost money?

No. Opening an inbox is free. There is no paid tier and no account to upgrade.

Are there ads?

No. The pages do not run advertising.

Who is the site for?

Who can use it?

People who are at least 16 years old. The site is not directed at children. Do not use it to collect information about a child.

Where is the site hosted?

Cloudflare hosts the pages, stores the mailbox database, and receives the mail for the domain.

Will the rules change?

They can. Terms and privacy show a date at the top when they change. The service can also be suspended or stopped. There is no promise of a replacement.

The rules are also written on the terms and privacy pages.
